I sincerely want to thank Jim Fox, the Director General of the South Asia Bureau and Jim Junke the Director of the South Asia Division who nominated me for the 2003 Foreign Service Officer Award. I am grateful as well to my High Commissioner, Konrad Sigurdson and my colleague, Brian Burton, who supported the nomination and who have been a constant source of encouragement of my work on Afghanistan. A very special thanks to my fellow PAFSO members and the panel who selected me as one of this year’s recipients. For me, it felt peculiar to be recognised in this way for doing something that I love. I can understand how Oscar winners can go on and on with long lists of people to whom they express gratitude. There are many colleagues, friends and family members behind the scenes who make it possible for us to do our best in the Foreign Service and I shall be communicating the them on an individual basis to say thank you. But to everyone else, thank you very much. Merci beaucoup.
